+   According to a study by Edmunds, the average price of a used vehicle rose to $21,558 in July, up $708 from June, as low interest rates propelled demand. More at USA Today. 

 An attorney and former consultant to airbag maker Takata says there are still millions of vehicles on the road with defective airbags due to their ammonium nitrate propellant. More at Autoblog. 

 Insiders report that the next BMW M5 performance sedan could forego fossil fuel power in favor of  an electric drivetrain producing more than 1000 horsepower. More at Motor Trend. 

+   Racing Point owner Lawrence Stroll says he is “extremely angry” about accusations that his Formula 1 team has broken the rules by copying components from other teams. More at BBC Sport. 

 +   Accusations that convicted Fiat Chrysler executive Alphons Iacobelli used secret offshore bank accounts to bribe union officials are baseless, his lawyer says. More at The Detroit News.

 A U.S. district judge denied bail to two Massachusetts men accused of helping to orchestrate former Nissan Motor Co Chairman Carlos Ghosn’s escape from Japan. More at Reuters. 

+   Hyundai will spin off its Ioniq nameplate as a standalone subbrand for the automaker’s electric, but the current Ioniq hatchback will not join the lineup. More at CNET Roadshow.  

 Upstart British automaker INEOS has won a court battle in the UK to produce its Grenadier SUV, despite a striking resemblance to the original Land Rover Defender. More at Car and Driver. 

+   Originally slated for April 1, Gooding & Company’s first car auction abroad has now been rescheduled for Hampton Court Palace in central London.on September 5. More at Classic Cars.com Journal. 

+   Despite the loss of his  Acura Team Penske IMSA sports car ride at the end of this season, three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves says he has no plans for retirement. More at Racer.

  1. So airbags are still not safe. Classic lunacy, same vehicle manufacturer, same airbag on the same steering wheel but one is recalled and the other not. Oh what a feeling,,NOT!
    A female friend got rear ended in a car park, the airbag went off and she ended up with two black eyes from her glasses, which were also broken. No sharp shards however.
    As for BMW,,, electric only. Fiscal suicide

  2. I’ve never like the idea of an explosive bag in front of my face. My son ran off the road and got stopped in a shallow ditch, the bag deployed. My wife got rear ended in her Expedition by a Toyota 4 Runner, totally destroyed the 4 Runner, bent the tailgate and bumper on the Expedition but the air bag never deployed. She was sitting still, the 4 Runner was doing at least 45 or more.
    I’ll take my chances with a lap and shoulder belt, thank you. You can keep your bomb for yourself carmakers.
