The 1964 NHRA Winternationals in Photos

Only 54 years past deadline, here’s our report on the 1964 NHRA Winternationals from Pomona, California. On the plus side, we’ve got some awesome color slides from the event.

This awesome photo scrapbook from the golden age of drag racing comes to us courtesy of YouTube denizen Woody Woodford, who assembled the color transparencies in the form of a handy video slideshow: view, freeze, and rewind at will. We’ve got a bunch of reasons to love these slides from the hot pits at Pomona in February 1964. But for one, we enjoyed the wonderful juxtaposition of famous and not-so-famous race cars. Check them out:

+   The Stone, Woods, and Cook Swindler A supercharged Willys, one of the most fearsome gassers on the West coast, or anywhere for that matter. Here it’s wearing its early light blue paint and Googie-style lettering.

A sweet little B/Altered painted lemon-pie yellow with a Model T Ford roadster body, fuel-injected small-block Chevy, and whitewall drag slicks.

+   The Davis & Ingram Fiat Altered, which was the subject of an eye-popping color feature in the June 1965 issue of Hot Rod magazine. The bright purple Fiat was one of a series of exquisitely constructed race cars from Joe Davis of San Jose, California.

+   A period-perfect 1955 Chevy gasser constructed from a Bel Air hardtop, as raced by the Gostenik brothers of California, sporting enormous quarter-panel cutouts to accommodate pie-crust slicks on original Torque-Thrust wheels.

Thanks again to Woody Woodford for providing us with this great moment in drag racing. Do you see any of your favorites here? Video follows.
