Video: Building a Chevy LS V8 in Clear Plastic

To beat the boredom, this ingenious home builder is creating a Chevrolet LS V8 in clear acrylic plastic.

Well, here we are in mid-April 2020, the period that may someday come to be known as the Long Lockdown, or perhaps the Epoch of Self-Isolation. Who knows, maybe we will look back with nostalgia at life-saving terms like “social distancing” and “flattening the curve.” At any rate, people are coming up with clever ways to keep themselves occupied during the COVID-19 outbreak. Take this guy, for instance: He’s building a full-sized replica of the Chevrolet LS V8 from polymethyl methacrylate plastic—better known as Plexiglas (or Lucite, Perspex, Acrylite, et alia).

Brian King of Norfolk, Nebraska operates a YouTube channel called AWD Cutlass, where the motto is “dream it, plan it, build it, or modify the hell out of it.” There you will find a number of fun and interesting DIY projects, from carbon fiber panel fabrication to cast epoxy wheels. We don’t know how he got the idea to fabricate a clear plastic Chevy LS V8, but it caught our interest. Maybe it’s his take on the venerable Visible V8 model kit of our childhoods (read about it here). Below is part 1 of the project. If the lockdown continues, we could soon see a pair of clear plastic LS cylinder heads. Video follows.

  1. With all the “spit shields” installed everywhere, I’m surprised there’s any plexiglass left. Those guys are doing okay. See? Right product, right time.
