Today’s Headlines:

+   Upstart electric truck maker Rivian Automotive, which already operates a plant in Illinois, plans to build a second U.S. assembly plant that will include battery cell production. More at TechCrunch. 

 South Korean carmaker Hyundai reported its best quarterly profits in nearly six years, propelled by solid demand for SUVs and its premium-brand Genesis vehicles. More at Reuters. 

+   Mercedes-Benz reports that all its new vehicle platforms created from 2025 forward will be electric only, and that the company plans to have an all-electric product line by 2030. More at CNET Roadshow.  

 As rumored for weeks, NASCAR 2012 champion Brad Keselowski will leave Team Penske at the end of 2021 to become a driver and team co-owner at Roush Fenway Racing. More at ESPN.

+   Volvo Cars has agreed to take control of its China ventures from parent Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd., potentially boosting its valuation for a planned stock sale. More at The Detroit News. 

 According to data from Kelly Blue Book, average new car transaction prices in June  soared to another record of $42,258,  a 6.36 percent increase over the same month last year. More at Autoblog. 

 Supercar builder SSC admitted that its 1750-hp Tuatara did not reach the originally claimed speeds of 331 or 301 mph in its controversial record run in Nevada last year. More at Car and Driver. 

 GMC confirmed that it will offer a full-size electric pickup similar to the Sierra and sharing some components from the Hummer EV, but has not chosen a name yet. More at The Drive. 

+   The Artcurial Motorcars Monaco auction at the Hôtel Hermitage in Monte Carlo recorded $7.7 million in sales, including $1.15 million for a 1968 Lamborghini Miura. More at Classic Cars.com Journal. 

+   Helio Castroneves, who at 46 won his fourth Indianapolis 500 this year driving for Meyer Shank Racing, has landed a full-time seat with the IndyCar team for next season. More at IndyStar.
