Because slot cars rule

Here’s the latest from Slot Mods USA, custom builders of slot car tracks for the rich and famous. The company calls this setup the Premier Edition Raceway—its first “standard offering.” Look, only 35,000 bucks. And just in time for Mother’s Day!

Based in Clinton Township, Michigan, Slot Mods is famed for its over-the-top slot track installations—the ultimate for gearheads who want the best and are willing to pay for it. You’ve seen these luxurious layouts featured in Autoweek, at Jay Leno’s Garage, and even in the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog.

This latest product is a change of pace for the company— it’s somewhat off the rack, so to speak. The 5×16-feet spread features a three-lane race circuit with hand-carved topography, scale Armco aluminum guardrail, painted track surface, LED base lighting, three commercial-grade controllers, a power transformer, and six 1/32-scale slot cars. For ease of transportation and setup, the layout is constructed in two 5×8-ft. track sections with two support bases.

Lap timer, custom scenery, and other bespoke features are available for additional $$$. Top and side views are below. You can find out more about the company and its products at Slotmods.com, or see the layouts in action at the Slot Mods YouTube Channel.

  1. Had my layout back in 1966 it was really cool!! we also had a
slot track shop where we could race our cars,

  2. Seems a bit expensive for something that a 16 year old could have built in 1964. I guess that if you have $35k to spend on this kind of stuff then you don’t have enough free time to build it. It’s probably more fun to work on the correct liveries for the cars anyway.

The custom layouts on their website are awesome. Unfortunately, I’m a little short on cash this week. I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today

  3. Do you realize how much Strombecker (Scalextric, Carrera, etc) track you can buy for $35K ???

    • Yes. I do.

MCG contributor Rick Voegelin would probably also add that 35 Large would buy enough HO track to stretch from Zug Island to Sudbury.

But that’s not really the point with this gear. As with many ultra-high end products, with your big bucks you are paying for lots of fussy little details, exclusivity, and concierge service. I once paid $30 for a bagel in Beverly Hills. It was a really nice bagel.

      • But who would have more fun – the kid with miles of track to navigate or the guy with a 35K layout that you can run in, what,4 seconds? Honestly, that is no more than a tweaked figure eight. if you’re driving, you’re not looking at the scenery. That’s what model railroads are for…
