+   Nissan Motor Co. will lay off around 1,000 workers at its Cuernavaca and Aguascalientes plants in Mexico, the company announced, citing “challenging market conditions.” More at MSN Money. 

 The United Auto Workers and Unifor, the Canadian auto workers’ union, are stepping up their public campaigns to keep five North American General Motors plants open. More at The Detroit News. 

 BMW named former Daimler marketing vice president Jens Thiemer as its new head of brand management to replace Sven Schuwirth, who is returning to Audi. More at Automotive News Europe. 

+   Longtime IMSA competitor Riley Motorsports will expand its racing program for 2019 with a Mercedes-AMG GT4 in the Michelin Pilot Challenge Grand Sport (GS) class. More at Racer. 

 McLaren has revealed a custom P1 GTR coupe with a red-and-white paint scheme emulating the MP4/4 driven to the 1988 Formula 1 championship by Ayrton Senna. More at The Drive.

 Nissan’s jailed and deposed chairman Carlos Ghosn has vowed to restore his reputation in court after a month in detention, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported. More at Reuters. 

+   The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released its list of 57 vehicles that earned 2019 Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ awards, with Subaru taking seven spots. More at Motor Trend. 

 Informed sources say Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is developing an inline six engine in the 3.0-liter range that may first see use in the Jeep Cherokee and Wagoneer. More at Autoblog.
