Saturday Morning CarTune: Asleep at the Wheel medley

For this morning’s CarTune we’ve got a twofer: a pair of great road songs, “Miles and Miles of Texas” and “Route 66,” performed by one of America’s great road bands, Asleep at the Wheel.

Without a doubt, the most requested CarTune here at Mac’s Motor City Garage is Asleep at the Wheel’s version of “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66.” That’s not difficult to understand: it’s a killer tune. Here’s the tightest, sweetest country swing band in all the land, performing what is arguably the greatest road song in the great American songbook.

Founded in 1970 in Paw, Paw, West Virginia, and led by baritone Ray Benson, Asleep at the Wheel has been playing “Route 66” for several decades now—and buddy, they’ve got it down. They seem to find a new wrinkle in the Bobby Troup classic every time they play it.

And here’s a nice bonus: this video clip kicks off with a slick rendition of the Bob Wills classic (penned by Tommy Camfield and Diane Johnson), “Miles and Miles of Texas.” Please enjoy.

  1. Always hated the caterwalling country “music”,but always loved western music.
Been listening to A SLEEP AT THE WHEEL for years. Thanks for posting 2 of their best.

  2. You haven’t lived until you’ve been to a real Texas dancehall away from the tourist areas on a Friday night. Many originals still going strong. Y’all come! YEEE HAAAAAAA. And if you have the chance to see Asleep play live, DO IT.
