Saturday morning CarTune: Car Crazy Cutie

This morning’s musical selection is one of the more obscure Beach Boys car songs, “Car Crazy Cutie.” The track was included in the group’s car-flavored 1963 album, Little Deuce Coupe.

This CarTune starts out slowly with some awkward, forced-sounding harmony work, but then settles into the classic Beach Boys soundscape with Brian Wilson on the lead vocal, all laid over an easy, rolling beat. Fine stuff. The lyrics are sort of okay but might work best when you don’t analyze them too carefully:

I take her to the drags, man, and everyone flips                                                                    for her big blue eyes and her candy apple lips

…The videos used for the Saturday Morning CarTune feature here at Motor City Garage can be all over the place in visual appeal, from great to horrible. (For MCG it’s about the music.) Period performance clips are preferred, but that material is pretty rare. Often the musical tracks are accompanied with amateur-built still montages of, shall we say, variable quality. However, in this case the photos are well worth studying. Check them out.

  1. It’s easy to pick faults with the song, but that is beside the point, it’s a great summer sound, and finally we have summer in the UK. The photos are great, and the Beach Boys are the perfect backing trrack. Thanks.

  2. Especially enjoyed the Beach Boy’s Car Cutie video clip. Lots of history in those girls with cars. Ashley Force — brought a big smile 🙂 Girls and their cars 4ever.
