Saturday morning CarTune: Junior Brown’s got him a 409

You’ve heard “409” by the Beach Boys and the Rip Chords. Now hear it by the Texas double-neck madman, Junior Brown. The Beach Boys dug his version of their old tune so much they went into the studio with him for a sendup. Check it out.

Brown is probably best known for catchy, off-kilter tunes like “My Baby Don’t Dance to Nothing but Ernest Tubb” and  (you’re wanted by the the police and) “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead.”  His style defies categorization, but it might in part be described as Jimi Hendrix meets Red Sovine. He’s done an album of car-flavored songs, Down Home Chrome, but “409” is not included there. The W-motor tribute is featured on the Beach Boys’ 1996 release, Stars and Stripes, Vol. 1. Enjoy.

  1. My God, what a gloriously insane man is Junior Brown! Why didn’t someone tell me about him earlier? I’ve just spent a wonderful couple of hours watching and listening to him on youtube, from trucking songs to Texas blues to traditional rags with acid flashbacks…

    • Yep, you got to love a guy who finds it necessary to engineer his own musical instruments. You know it’s gonna be original.
