Saturday Morning CarTune: Roadrunner

It’s about time. This morning’s CarTune is “Roadrunner” by The Modern Lovers.

The pride of Boston, Massachusetts, the Modern Lovers are the original proto-punk band. Founder Jonathan Richman crafted two-chord masterpieces like this one, “Roadrunner” from 1972. Rock and roll was never more elemental or true to form than it is here.

Gonna drive past the Stop ‘n’ Shop
With the radio on

There’s a campaign under way to make “Roadrunner” the state rock song of Massachusetts.

The video below is a great time, too: a high-speed automotive tour of the streets of Boston in several time periods. Natives, see how many local landmarks you can identify. Gearheads, see how many old cars you can spot: ’65 Galaxie, ’61 Impala convertible,’58 Coupe DeVille…

  1. Cool beans. Remember hearing them, The Beaver Brown Band, Molly McGregor Band, and Robin Lane and the Chartbusters, in various pubs in the early 70’s around New England.None of the preceding made it as big as Aerosmith, Boston or J. Geils, but were fun to hang out in a pub with.
