Video: GoPro Camera Inside an Automobile Tire On The Road

Have you ever wondered what things look like inside an automobile tire at speed? Yes, so have we. Thanks to one inventive YouTuber, here’s a video.

Warped Perception is a wildly popular YouTuber (225 million views) who likes to explore technology with unique, resourceful, and often irreverent methods. The approach includes, as he puts it, “filming in a way that allows us to see things in a way that we normally cannot see.” Projects include all kinds of see-through engines, a rocket launched from under water, and filming circuit breakers in slow motion. It’s a fresh way to look at the way machines operate, for sure.

The video we’re featuring here was prompted by a request from a Warped Perception viewer: What’s it look like inside the tire of moving car? Warped Perception’s response must have beenĀ  something like, “Say no more.” In short order he was mounting a tiny GoPro Hero 7 video camera, an external battery pack, and a minature movie light inside the right-front wheel-and-tire assembly of his Mercedes and going for a drive.

Since the camera is solidly fixed to the interior rim of the wheel, there are no visual indications of rotating motion, except for the tiny bits of loose debris flying around inside the tire. Mainly what we see is the deformation of the tire carcass under various loads including rolling, cornering, and backing up (also mounting, which is interesting, too). It’s definitely a different way to look at—and think about—the dynamics of an automobile tire as it goes about its job. Video below.
