Video: Learning the Art of Clay Modeling

Join Denise Kasper of Ford of Europe as she talks about her chosen profession: the art of clay modeling in automotive design.

This question often arises among car enthusiasts: Is clay modeling still used in the automotive design biz? Or has it become yet another lost craft? We can report that the art is alive and well, as clay modeling remains an essential element in the process of automotive design. New tools are continually introduced, both to the total design process and to the clay modeling stage itself, but it seems that despite all the ongoing changes, clay is here to stay.

This video is part of a series from Ford of Europe exploring the role of clay in vehicle development—you can view the original video at Mac’s Motor City GarageĀ here. In this continuation of the series, Ford modeler Denise Kasper talks about how she was drawn to clay modeling and the skills, both physical and mental, the craft demands from its artisans. It’s a fascinating glimpse inside one of the pure art forms within the automotive world. Video below.
