Video: The 2019 Mercedes Formula 1 Steering Wheel

With its dozens of switches and selectors, the steering wheel is the nerve center of a modern Formula 1 car. Here’s a breakdown on the Mercedes AMG piece for 2019.

The contemporary Formula 1 car is fiendishly complex, and so is the job of its driver. That’s our immediate takeaway in viewing this eye-opening video from Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport explaining the steering wheel on the 2019 W10, the team’s latest entry in the F1 wars. Fortunately, driver Valtteri Bottas and team engineer Evan Short are along to detail the wheel’s countless systems and functions for us. In four minutes, they manage to break down all the operations in a logical and sensible manner, from the multiple engine calibrations to the adjustable differential settings.

Still, we remain extremely impressed with the drivers’ ability to operate all these systems on the fly—while simultaneously driving the fastest motor vehicles on earth at the very limits of performance. Obviously, that’s what the countless hours of testing, practice, and simulator work are for—and how they earn their multi-million dollar salaries. Video below.
