Body Bountiful: A 1957 Fisher Body Film

See how the Fisher Body division at General Motors produced automobile bodies decades ago in this original factory color film.

Sharp-eyed viewers at Mac’s Motor City Garage will immediately notice that while this original GM film is labeled by the host as a 1955 production, and that the numerous shop scenes show 1955 cars, there is a gallery at the end of the movie that features 1957 models. Okay then, we presume the film was produced sometime during the 1955 model year, and then it was updated for 1957 with a segment featuring current model cars added at the end. It’s not a big deal given the topic and the context. We just thought we should mention it to avoid any confusion.

In any case, whether it’s 1955 or 1957, Body Bountiful includes some great insights on Fisher Body’s manufacturing process in that era. There’s a lot more to an auto body than we might realize, from door handles, hinges, and locks to door glass regulators, and the movie goes into decent detail on these items. Also, starting at around 13 minutes there’s an excellent explanation of the diemaking process. There’s a lot to see here so we’ll let you get to it. Video below.
