Saturday morning CarTune: Goofy in Motor Mania

See what we did here? For this edition of the Saturday morning CarTune, we shifted gears and selected an actual cartoon: “Motor Mania” by Walt Disney, starring Goofy.

This little animated short is fun on a couple of counts: First, for the stylized depiction of the cars of the day, by which we mean approximately 1950, the year the cartoon was produced. All the autos have an idealized sort of streamline moderne flavor.

And there’s the wonderful musical score by Paul J. Smith, Disney’s Academy Award-winning composer.

Then there’s the storyline, which could be lifted directly from James Thurber’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” It turns out that once Goofy gets behind the wheel, he’s a real animal. Who knew.
