Video: Let Yourself Go in the 1966 Plymouth Sport Fury

Check out the 1966 Plymouth Sport Fury with its awesome bucket-seat interior and see if  you’re ready to let yourself go.

The setup for this clip featuring the 1966 Plymouth Sport Fury isn’t entirely original. You’ve seen it  before from American Motors and Buick, to name two. A police officer walking the beat encounters a handsome new car and naturally, he stops to admire it at length.  We have to admit that while it’s a little corny, it’s an effective way to present a car’s visual features as meanwhile, the announcer clicks off the selling points. Plymouth’s tagline for ’66 was “Let yourself go,” and it seems that here, the officer does just that. Instead of writing a parking ticket, he feeds the parking meter on the car owner’s behalf.

Based on Chrysler’s big C-body platform with a 119-inch wheelbase, the Sport Fury was offered in two body styles: two-door Hardtop Coupe and Convertible Coupe. A number of features set it apart from the rest of the Fury line, but our favorite is the snazzy  interior with its vinyl bucket seats, a big chrome center console, and console-mounted shift lever and electric clock. (Plymouth must have been proud, too, as the cabin is shown twice here.) The standard engine was a 318 CID two-barrel V8, but buyers could select two different 383 CID Commando V8s or the beefy 440 Commando with 365 hp. Video below.

  1. When my uncle returned from Vietnam in 1968 he bought a 66 Sport Fury with the 440. He would humor us neighbor kids occasionally by doing long smoky burnouts. Downhill, on the main road out of the neighborhood. Probably power braking, but mighty impressive to a bunch of 10-14 year old boys.

  2. Lovely ad – the music, particularly. The lighting makes it looks like it was shot on a set, but I guess it’s a real street (?).

  3. Love the ad! Love the commercial!
    Beautiful vehicles back then!
    Thank you!
