Video: Marketing the 1966 Rambler Rogue

Here’s the sales pitch for the 1966 1/2 Rambler Rogue in an original American Motors spot.

You’ll immediately spot a familiar face in this original American Motors spot for the 1966 Rambler Rogue. The man in the passenger seat is Phil Bruns, a versatile character actor who appeared in countless movies and TV episodes—and lots of commercials, too. Sorry, but we can’t identify the actor behind the wheel, so help us out if you can. While on their way to work, the two guys engage in some nifty expository dialogue to click off all the neat attributes of the new Rogue.

Launched in mid-season of 1966, the Rogue was essentially the Rambler American 440 two-door pillarless hardtop, but with special trim and equipment to introduce the company’s new 290 cubic-inch Typhoon V8 (an almost complete redesign of the original 1956 AMC V8). Standard gear included a black vinyl cockpit with AMC’s reclining bucket seats, and on the first 1,700 cars, special two-tone gold paint. Despite its conservative good looks and sporty equipment, the Rogue was never a big seller in its four years of production, surely due to the proliferation of flashy pony cars in the same price range  Anyway, it’s nice to get a good look at one here. 1. Thanks for all your stories on American Motors and obscure aspects of the industry. The constant all-musclecar coverage elsewhere has gotten old.

  2. Phil Bruns may be best known for playing Jerry Seinfeld’s father in the pilot of “Seinfeld”…wish the ad would have shown the Mustang mentioned, too…
