Video: One-Off 1968 Cougar Fastback

The Mercury division of Ford Motor Co. never produced a fastback version of the Cougar, but this awesome homebuilt makes us wonder if that was a mistake.

This video comes to us courtesy of Youtuber vintagemotorhome, who doesn’t publish his name or location, so we’ll respect his decision. Anyway, he did let the world know he created this remarkable ’68 Cougar fastback, which looks for all the world like a factory build. “I sure like ’67-’68-’69-’70 Cougars as well as Mustangs,” he says, “and this to me combines the best of both.”

In his notes, the owner is quick to credit Jody Sauls of Custom Cars in Clinton, South Carolina, a noted builder, who performed the customizing, bodywork, and paint. The roof panel is from a ’67-’68 Mustang 2+2, and except for the 17-inch aftermarket wheels and custom metallic-pearl paint, the car looks like it came straight from a Ford plant—except, of course that Mercury never offered such a thing. (There was a Mercury show car back in 1970 with a Mustang roofline, El Gato, we featured here.) At any rate, we were so taken by the Cougar fastback we needed to share it here. Video below.

    • Absolutely beautiful, looks like it could be an upscale version of the torino

    • Looks better than a Mustang .. very similar roof line with a 66 Charger …

    • Me too one the 66,67 Chargers .. But still , I wish they would have made this option model . ie one a hardtop and a fastback …. But no .. no such thing đź‘Ž

  1. Ewww. The proportions don’t work on the Cougar’s longer (than Mustang) wheelbase. The 67/68 Cougar didn’t need to add a fastback bodystyle… it needed to add a convertible bodystyle.
