Video: Tiny Harley Panhead Runs and Sounds Just Like the Real Thing

Potato, potato, potato. Check out this jewel-like miniature Panhead that runs and sounds just like a full-size Harley big twin.

Produced from 1948 to 1966, the Harley-Davidson Panhead V-twin is one of the legendary engines of the motorcycle world. You can see how the nickname arose: The two valve covers look like inverted frying pans. Both 61 (EL) and 74 cubic-inch (FL) versions were produced for the big H-D Hydra-Glide and Duo-Glide touringt bikes, and for the finale of its production life in 1965 the husky V-twin powered the electric-start Electa Glide. If you’ve never gotten to experience one of these engines for yourself, here’s your chance to own a beautiful, jewel-like miniature that will fit on a corner of your desk. And best of all, it runs and sounds just like the full-size version.

The dinky Panheads (and other cool engines, too) are manufactured by Hong Kong-based Stirlingkit, and not surprisingly, owners tend to bond with them. You can find a number of demonstration videos on the web, but we thought this one by NDA Hack was especially well done. The clip takes us quickly and wordlessly through an unboxing and inspection of all the included accessories, a partial disassembly to show us the valvetrain and cam drives, building a test stand, and finally the firing up. Potato, potato, potato, just like a real big twin. Video below.

(Note: We found some reviews that reported communications problems between the company in Hong Kong and the USA, so if you are interested in a purchase, be comfortable with the transaction before you proceed.)

  1. Guess we’re all kids at heart. Looking at what a full-sized Panhead goes for these days, this might be the only one I can afford…

  2. $600 is not cheap but it’s a bargain for what it is. It makes me wonder how they can do it.
