This video didn’t come to us from within the automotive community, as usual, but from the Insider Business YouTube channel.  By coming at the subject from outside the industry—from scratch, if you will—the video gives us a fresh angle on the ancient art of clay modeling as it is  used every day in 21st century automotive design.

Yes, after nearly a century, clay modeling is still a key element in the styling process. It hasn’t been pushed aside by more recent technologies. Instead, the new tools and resources—CNC milling, CFD, FEA, wind tunnels, 3D printing, Virtual Reality—are combined with clay modeling to keep the process vital and useful. For example, here we see how 3D-printed parts are used to make clay models more realistic and compelling. Mark Sadler, head of the modeling department at Bentley, provides the expert commentary.
