Video: Reinventing the Chrysler Corporation, 1992

In 1992, the Chrysler Corporation was reinventing itself yet again. Lee Iacocca and crew tell the story in this vintage factory film with some excellent glimpses behind the scenes.

You’ll see some familiar personalities in this 1992 Chrysler film. They include:

+   Bob Lutz, a car-savvy industry veteran of several global automakers, who at this moment wore the title of president at Chrysler Corporation.

Francois Castaing, who came to Chrysler via Renault and the American Motors merger to become the company’s vice president of vehicle engineering.

+   Tom Gale, the son of a Buick engineer, who trained as an engineer himself before switching to design and ultimately advancing to the post of design chief at Chrysler.

+   And of course Lee Iacocca, the fired Ford executive who then performed a successful makeover of the Chrysler Corporation and became a pop culture celebrity with a best-selling book and a series of TV commercials.

In this film, the Chrysler Corporation is busily overhauling itself yet again, this time for the market challenges of the 1990s. Chrysler’s trusty K family of cars had run out of steam, and the company was rolling out the game-changing LH platform with its distinctive Cab Forward design.

There’s been a lot of water under the bridge at Chrysler since then: a merger and split with Daimler, acquisition by Fiat, and now a combination with PSA Group of France. This film captures one critical moment in the automaker’s long and varied history. Video below.

  1. Very good and informative video. Although not a Chrysler fan, I’ve always been fascinated on how Chrysler came back from the brink of disaster and became a mighty force in the automotive world again.

  2. The cab-forward cars looked great in their day an they were, comfortable. Mechanically they were terrible with head gasket and transmission problems in abundance.
